Trade Request and Potential Destinations
Terry McLaurin, a two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, has reportedly asked the Washington Commanders for a trade amidst stalled discussions over a new contract. While the Commanders are currently against parting ways with their leading wideout, here are five teams that could make a play for the five-time 1,000-yard receiver.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots appear to be a fitting destination for McLaurin. Even before his trade request, reports linked the 29-year-old to the team. The Patriots have ample salary cap space and a pressing need for a top wide receiver, particularly after DeMario Douglas led the team with just 621 receiving yards in 2024.
This offseason, the Patriots added notable players such as Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, and third-round rookie Kyle Williams. As Diggs approaches his 32nd birthday and recovers from a torn ACL, McLaurin could serve as a perfect complement to second-year quarterback Drake Maye.
Los Angeles Chargers
If McLaurin becomes available, the Los Angeles Chargers should seize the opportunity. Adding another reliable pass-catcher was critical for Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, who made significant moves, including drafting Tre Harris in the second round. The Chargers also re-signed Mike Williams, who retired before the preseason kicked off.
With an exceptionally young receiving group featuring Harris, Ladd McConkey, and Quentin Johnston, McLaurin could provide the Chargers with a seasoned weapon, boasting 460 career receptions, as they look to keep pace with potent offenses in the AFC.
Pittsburgh Steelers
This offseason marks one of Pittsburgh’s most aggressive periods in recent memory, and they show no signs of slowing down. McLaurin, who will turn 30 in September, could fill the WR2 role the Steelers have been seeking after acquiring DK Metcalf and parting ways with George Pickens. The current roster includes options like Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson, Robert Woods, and Ben Skowronek.
Although McLaurin’s potential new contract is projected to hit around $30 million per year, which complicates matters given the nearly $33 million annually already committed to Metcalf, the Steelers may still pursue another high-profile addition as they aim to re-establish themselves as contenders.
Arizona Cardinals
Acquiring McLaurin would be beneficial for the Arizona Cardinals on multiple fronts. While they have an intriguing trio in Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson, and Greg Dortch, none have yet emerged as established stars. The hope surrounding Harrison is that he evolves into a Pro Bowl-level player, though his rookie season was somewhat underwhelming.
McLaurin would alleviate some of the pressure on Harrison, creating a formidable receiving duo if Harrison lives up to the lofty expectations set for him. Should Harrison struggle again in his second season, McLaurin would still provide a proven WR1 for quarterback Kyler Murray and the team.
Las Vegas Raiders
Looking toward the 2025 season, the Las Vegas Raiders are projected to feature Jakobi Meyers as their top wide receiver, prompting a need for both impact and depth. This urgency is reflected in their decision to draft three wideouts this year, including two in the initial four rounds.
Acquiring McLaurin would represent another strategic move for Las Vegas, which is trying to transform its culture under head coach Pete Carroll. With McLaurin’s leadership experience as a long-term captain in Washington, he could bring valuable expertise to the team. Adding an established receiver like McLaurin just before the season begins aligns well with the Raiders’ new direction following the acquisition of veteran quarterback Geno Smith.
