The New York Mets have announced the re-signing of right-handed pitcher Chris Devenski to a one-year major league contract. As a corresponding move, fellow right-hander Huascar Brazobán has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. With this adjustment, the Mets’ 40-man roster was able to accommodate Devenski’s return.

Just a week ago, Devenski was designated for assignment and subsequently removed from the Mets’ roster. After clearing waivers, he elected to become a free agent, but the Mets have swiftly brought him back on a new agreement.

During his previous stint with the team, Devenski pitched 11 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs from seven hits and allowing three walks while also striking out nine batters. This season, he has spent considerable time in Triple-A, where he has compiled 25 innings, achieving a 4.32 ERA, a 17.2% strikeout rate, and a 4% walk rate, with a ground ball rate of 50.6%.

The Mets have faced numerous pitching injuries this year, resulting in the constant adjustment of their roster. A.J. Minter, Danny Young, Max Kranick, and Dedniel Núñez have all suffered season-ending surgeries. In light of these challenges, the Mets have been actively seeking reinforcements in Devenski, along with José Castillo, Génesis Cabrera, Richard Lovelady, and José Ureña, frequently moving players in and out of the lineup.

With Thursday’s transaction deadline approaching, the Mets are reportedly prioritizing their bullpen. They have already acquired Gregory Soto from the Orioles and are expected to make additional roster moves within the next 48 hours, which may yet again impact Devenski’s place on the team as these transactions unfold.
