Mayor Eric Adams of New York City provided new details regarding the tragic shooting at an office building in Midtown Manhattan on July 28, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left one injured. Referring to the attack as an ‘intentional, sick, twisted act of violence,’ Adams discussed the shooter’s intentions during an exclusive interview with ABC News’ Aaron Katersky.
The gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, reportedly traveled from Nevada with the apparent aim of targeting the NFL headquarters located at 345 Park Avenue. A note found on him alluded to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), although authorities continue to investigate the true motive behind the heinous act. ‘We’re far from the investigation to finalize exactly what happened,’ Adams stated. ‘We’re looking at his note that talked about CTE… but it is far from conclusive.’
The mayor disclosed that while the shooter had a history of playing high school football, he had no experience at the collegiate or professional levels. He described the security camera footage as revealing a disturbing disregard for human life, noting the moment the gunman let a woman pass unharmed while attacking others. Among the deceased were wesley LePatner, a mother of two working at Blackstone; Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD officer; security officer Aland Etienne; and Julia Hyman from Rudin Management.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Adams commended the building’s management for their robust security measures, which included an armed guard, emergency protocols, and active shooter drills. ‘I believe their actions saved the lives of many employees,’ he remarked.
One witness, Jessica Chen, was in the building during the attack and described the atmosphere as chilling. ‘We heard multiple shots go off in quick succession from the first floor,’ she recounted. Chen, along with approximately 150 others, took refuge in a second-floor conference room. ‘I texted my parents that I loved them,’ Chen said. ‘Nothing could have prepared any of us. I think all of us were frozen.’
In light of this tragedy, Mayor Adams accentuated the urgent need for tighter gun control laws across the nation, reinforcing his stance on New York City as the safest large city in America. ‘The response to shooters of this magnitude, mass shooters, cannot be vigils. It must be legislation,’ he emphasized, raising concerns over the accessibility of automatic weapons.
Following the incident, two investigative teams were dispatched to Las Vegas to execute a search warrant at the shooter’s residence and to delve into the firearms used during the assault. Preliminary findings indicated that some components of the automatic weapon had been procured by an unidentified individual, suggesting possible collaboration in the crime.
Adams revealed that President Donald Trump had reached out to extend his condolences and commend the NYPD for their quick response. ‘They went into the building with knowledge that there was a shooter present,’ Adams said, praising the officers’ courageous actions. ‘They did not wait, and they knew their timing was important.’
